Elementary and Secondary School Teaching Assistants need to be able to

  • understand announcements given by the school
  • contact suppliers or service representatives to order supplies or arrange field trips

Elementary and Secondary School Teaching Assistants need to be able to

  • sense students moods
  • tell or read stories to the class
  • communicate with other teaching assistants to share ideas and practices
  • work with and take direction from teachers to
    • co-ordinate class activities
    • plan teaching schedules
    • share learning ideas and information about the students
  • resolve conflicts between students
  • communicate with parents to discuss
    • progress
    • behaviour
    • upcoming activities
  • communicate with counsellors or school administrators to
    • share information
    • receive instructions
  • make timetables

Elementary and Secondary School Teaching Assistants need to be able to

  • take part in staff meetings, conferences and training sessions
  • communicate with students to
    • give help
    • support them
    • give direction
  • encourage students

Elementary and Secondary School Teaching Assistants communicate

  • in person
  • using a TTY, videophone, blackberry, or email
  • using specialized communications signals

Noise from children talking or playing and the public address system make communicating difficult.
