Numeracy

  • track costs to make sure projects stay within budgets
  • measure free disk space to make sure there is enough disk space left
  • determine the amount of time needed to repair software or add new features

  • use formulas to set the width, height and position of web page design elements
  • figure the time needed to download software programs
  • gather system users’ data such as age, data rates, home domains and log on types to compare system use across different user groups
  • add math functions into software routines

Examples

  • write software to figure out the percent of the Canadian population in a certain group of people (male, female, under 20, over 60 etc)
  • average scores for online quizzes

  • figure out total invoice amounts for the number of hours worked using hourly rates for labour and adding taxes
  • set timelines for tasks on a daily, weekly and monthly basis
  • schedule the work of large teams of workers
  • change schedules as needed to complete projects on time
  • analyze and compare the number and size of data packets sent through the system during a test period to see if there are changes that need to be made
  • determine the amount of time needed to develop software applications
